About Actually, I Am...
Asahi Kuromine is a high schooler notorious for supposedly being unable to keep secrets, which makes life tricky when he accidentally discovers his classmate Yoko Shiragami sprouting a large pair of wings. Yoko confesses she is a vampire and can only attend a regular school so long as her true nature stays hidden. Asahi promises to protect her secret, but the promise clashes with everyday high school chaos: Yoko is sweet but scatterbrained, Asahi is awkward and guilt-prone, and their friend Mikan delights in teasing and bullying the pair. The series stays light, focusing on awkward moments, misunderstandings, and the strain of guarding an odd truth.
Created by Kenichi Yamashita and first released in 2015, the animated comedy brings together a notable voice cast, including Natsuki Hanae as Asahi and Yu Serizawa as Yoko, with Inori Minase, Reina Ueda, and Aya Uchida in supporting roles.
The series did not receive major industry awards or prominent nominations, so it remained under the radar in formal prize circuits despite a dedicated viewer base.
Although it never broke into mainstream anime zeitgeist, Actually, I Am... found a modest niche audience. Fans have shared character art and short clips online, often highlighting Yoko's wings and the show's goofy romantic beats, and the chemistry among the voice actors has kept interest alive on social media.
Reception among viewers skews positive, with a user score around 7.9 out of 10 based on 45 votes. Viewers tend to enjoy the sitcom pacing, the interplay between shy and airheaded characters, and the mix of supernatural setup with mundane school life. Criticisms commonly point to episodic simplicity and an emphasis on gags over deep plotting, but if you want a breezy, character-driven comedy about secrecy and teenage awkwardness, it delivers light entertainment.
What Viewers Are Saying
Jitsu wa Watashi wa is a breezy romcom with vampires and secrets, following Asahi who can’t lie and Youko the vampire who hides her true self. People say it lands the light humor and looks solid, but the cast can feel familiar and the premise wears a familiar harem vibe too often. Pacing can dip at times and the ending leaves room for more, yet for a casual watch it hits the right mood and offers enough funny moments to keep you around.
