About Ajin
Ajin follows Kei Nagai, a reserved high school student whose life is abruptly overturned when a fatal traffic accident doesn't end him. He discovers he's one of a rare class of immortal beings called Ajin, and that revelation makes him a target. With a bounty on his head and governments and shadowy groups hunting Ajin for their powers, Kei is forced to leave everything behind and try to stay alive. The series focuses on the day-to-day pressure of living under constant threat, the moral choices that come with lethal power, and the uneasy alliances that form as humans and Ajin collide.
Released as a 2016 anime adaptation, the series credits Hiroshi Seko and Gamon Sakurai among its creators, and features voices by Mamoru Miyano, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Aya Suzaki, Daisuke Hirakawa, and Hiroyuki Kinoshita.
The show didn't gather major mainstream awards, though it earned recognition within genre circles and maintained a loyal fanbase that kept discussion alive after each season.
Ajin made a noticeable mark on anime fandom because of its bleak atmosphere and mature tone. Its visual choices and recurring imagery stuck with viewers, and it sparked conversations about how darker, more violent stories are handled in modern animation. The series also helped broaden interest in serialized, morally ambiguous anime with a focus on survival and power politics.
Critical and audience reaction landed mostly on the positive side, reflected in a 7.9 out of 10 vote average from 331 votes. Reviewers and viewers highlighted the show's tense mood, ethical complexity, and strong voice performances, while reactions to the animation style varied. Major themes include mortality and what immortality does to identity, the ethics of exploiting living beings, and the ways fear reshapes communities and individuals.
