When Spanish conquistadors murder his father, Yohualli Coatl flees his village and heads to Tenochtitlán to deliver a dire warning to King Moctezuma and the high priest Yoka. In the great city he finds refuge in a temple dedicated to the bat god Tzinacan, where an older mentor helps him train and forge strange, ingenious gear. Yohualli shapes himself into a masked protector, balancing ritual duties with clandestine strikes as tensions between Aztec leaders and foreign invaders mount. Along the way he crosses paths with the fierce Jaguar Woman and the charismatic conquistador Hernán Cortés, setting up a collision between old gods, new weapons, and loyalties tested by war.
