Created by Helena Harris, the series premiered on ABC on 20 July 1992, with the pilot titled "Pink Mug." It later aired in the United States under the spelling "Bananas in Pajamas," and from 1995 to 1997 it ran in syndication as a half-hour block and was paired with The Crayon Box under Sachs Family Entertainment.

The program was widely syndicated and dubbed into multiple languages, so its yellow-suited characters became familiar to young audiences around the world. A scene and the characters also appeared in the Kids for Character sequel "Kids for Character: Choices Count," which helped extend their presence beyond the original episodes. The simple costumes and clear visual identity made the show easy to recognize across different markets.
