About Batman & Robin
Gotham City is under pressure from two dramatic threats as Batman teams up with Robin to foil new schemes. Mr Freeze wants to turn the city into a frozen world using ice bound technology, while Poison Ivy plans to bend the metropolis to her botanical will through danger and seduction. The Dynamic Duo race through neon streets and rooftop chases, deploying gadgets and grit to stop each plan before the city freezes solid. A fresh ally, Batgirl, joins the effort to stand with them against clever traps and escalating peril. The action packs humor with peril as the trio learns to rely on teamwork in the face of escalating danger. Despite its bright surface, the film attempts to balance fast paced stunts with light humor and the evolving dynamics between Batman, Robin, and Batgirl as they confront a city under siege.
Directed by Joel Schumacher and released in 1997, the film draws on DC Comics' Batman characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, with Akiva Goldsman scripting the adaptation. It features a high profile cast led by George Clooney as Batman and Chris O'Donnell as Robin.
The film grossed about 238 million worldwide, with domestic earnings around 107 million, against a reported budget of roughly 125 million, making it a sizable box office but not a blockbuster by modern standards.
Visually the movie is remembered for its saturated colors, flashy gadgets, and over the top humor, a stark contrast to other Batman films. It has become a touchstone in discussions of superhero tone in the 1990s and a cautionary example of studio led excess.
Critics largely panned the production for its campy style and thin narrative, though some applauded the energy of the action and the chemistry among the leads. Key themes include teamwork and identity, the lure of spectacle, and the clash between science driven villainy and hero duty.
What Viewers Are Saying
Viewers have mixed opinions on Batman & Robin, with many criticizing the film's acting and overall quality, especially George Clooney's portrayal of Batman, which some consider the weakest in the series. However, others find the movie entertaining for its campy, playful tone and enjoy it as a fun, if flawed, installment with vibrant visuals and a lighthearted approach. While some see it as a low point for the Batman franchise, others appreciate its over-the-top style and escapism.
