About Black Butler: Book of Murder
On the Queen’s orders, Ciel Phantomhive and his demon butler Sebastian throw a lavish dinner for London’s elite, a guest list heavy with power and secrets. What starts as a display of refinement quickly sours as a prominent guest turns up dead in a private chamber. With a raging storm sealing the Phantomhive mansion, Ciel and Sebastian are forced to race against time, gathering clues among a circle of aristocrats and oddball attendees, among them the famed writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. As tension mounts, they must uncover the killer before suspicion shifts onto the hosts or their enigmatic staff. The night tests their alliance and the limits of trust.
Directed by Noriyuki Abe and rooted in Yana Toboso's Black Butler manga, Book of Murder is a 2014 animated feature that continues the Phantomhive saga with the same core duo and voice cast, including Daisuke Ono and Maaya Sakamoto.
The film carries the franchise's trademark sharp wit and polished animation while leaning into a classic locked room style mystery on a grand stage. It explores themes of power, loyalty, and deception as Ciel and Sebastian balance candor and menace to uncover motive. The tension between social pretense and hidden danger keeps the pace brisk, and the dynamic between master and servant remains a vehicle for humor and moral ambiguity.
What helps this film stand out is the playful cameo by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as part of the guest roster, nodding to detective fiction's golden age. For fans, it adds an in universe wink about storytelling craft, and it remains a solid entry in the Black Butler lineup.
There are no widely reported major award nominations or wins for this installment. While fans of the series may appreciate its visual style and character work, the film did not rack up notable accolades in major awards circuits.
