In the mid 1980s a group of college graduates arrive at a northwest automobile factory to begin internships, and their lives become tightly linked to the fate of the local car industry. Shen Xia, who had plans to study abroad, stays after witnessing the work on a new 7-ton truck, and she teams up with Ai Chang'an, a young factory technician, to push for technological and organizational improvements.
