About Burning Flame
Burning Flame follows a tight knit team of Hong Kong firefighters as they face life threatening rescues, relentless shifts, and the emotional toll of saving others. Set in a bustling city where high rises meet narrow lanes, the series foregrounds the grit, discipline, and improvisation that fire crews rely on when everything depends on timing. Lok Tin Yau, Lau Hoi Pak, Shum Pik Yiu, Lok Hiu Chui and Ng Tai Hing are among the central figures, each with their own pressures at home and on the job. The stories balance dangerous blazes with the everyday cost of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. This 1998 drama launches TVB's Burning Flame saga as a celebration of frontline service.
Created by Sum-Wai Wong, Chu Kang-Ki and 關頌玲, Burning Flame debuted in 1998 as TVB's first entry in the Burning Flame series. It was produced to celebrate TVB's 31st Anniversary and earned support from the Hong Kong Fire Services Department.
As a late 90s TVB action drama, Burning Flame helped popularize firefighting as a serious, character driven TV experience. With a star lineup including Wong Hei, Louis Koo and Esther Kwan, the show highlighted teamwork under pressure and the humanity behind the uniforms. Its emphasis on duty and camaraderie resonated with HK audiences and influenced later public service themed dramas.
Audiences greeted the series warmly and it carried the weight of its anniversary celebration in its production scale and performances. The show threads themes of courage, resilience, and balance between personal life and professional obligation, presenting frontline workers as everyday heroes. The ensemble cast delivers grounded portrayals that helped establish the tone for the Burning Flame installments.
Awards: The title does not have widely publicized major nominations or wins. Nonetheless, it helped elevate its principal cast and contributed to TVB's late 1990s prestige. The drama remains noted for its authentic depiction of fire service work and its influence on public service storytelling in Hong Kong.
