About Casshern Sins
When Luna, the machine who once guided an artificial civilization, is killed the world she helped run begins to rot. A mysterious affliction known as "The Ruin" spreads through robot communities, causing machines to decay and life to wither. Casshern, the man who killed Luna, alone remains uncorrupted but stripped of clear memory about what he did or why. Haunted by guilt and fragments of the past, he sets out to piece together his role in Luna's death and the origin of the plague, moving through ruined cities, crumbling ideals, and encounters that force him to ask whether memory or conscience defines a person or a machine.
This 2008 anime is a dark reimagining of Tatsunoko's classic Casshan concept, adapted by Yasuko Kobayashi from the original ideas associated with Tatsuo Yoshida. The series reframes the older character in a bleaker, more philosophical science fiction setting.
Among anime fans Casshern Sins is known for its austere, often stark visuals and its willingness to sit in long, silent moments. That aesthetic helped it carve out a reputation as a mood-driven work, and it regularly surfaces in discussions, fan art, and online theory threads about melancholic or existential anime.
Audience ratings are generally positive, with a community score around 7.06 out of 10 based on limited votes. Viewers frequently point to the show's exploration of mortality, identity, guilt, and decay, and praise the atmosphere and worldbuilding. Some viewers note the pacing is slow and demands patience, but many appreciate that the series refuses easy answers and keeps moral ambiguity at its center.
The show didn't collect major international awards, but it has maintained a steady niche following and critical interest within animation circles. Over time it has been reappraised for its tone, ambition, and visual design, earning respect as a darker, more reflective take on a familiar franchise.
