About Chain Reaction
Set at the University of Chicago, the story follows Eddie Kasalivich, a brilliant young machinist, as his team achieves a breakthrough in a stable fusion reaction that could power the world without waste. A private corporation covets the discovery and moves to seize the technology. Before long Eddie and physicist Dr. Lily Sinclair are suddenly branded criminals after a murder appears connected to the lab, and the crucial fusion device vanishes. On the run from the FBI, the pair must recover the prototype and clear their names while staying one step ahead of forces that want the science for themselves. The clock is ticking as danger closes in.
Directed by Andrew Davis, Chain Reaction is built from a screenplay by J F Lawton, with story contributions from Michael Bortman and Arne Schmidt. The film was released by Universal Pictures in 1996.
Chain Reaction grossed 60,209,334 worldwide against a 50,000,000 budget, yielding a modest but profitable return. Its box office reflects solid audience turnout without becoming a major blockbuster.
The movie is not known for a lasting cultural footprint, but it exemplifies mid 90s techno thriller craft with rapid chase sequences and practical stunts. Reeves and Freeman anchor the tension with straightforward, no-frills dialogue and grounded chemistry.
Critics offered mixed reactions, praising the cast and brisk pacing while noting implausibilities in the plot. The film explores themes of corporate greed, scientific responsibility, and the fragility of due process when powerful interests operate in secrecy. Overall, it remains a solid late 90s action thriller with a science edge.
