About Class
Class follows the awkward yearnings of a naive Midwestern prep student named Jonathan who bonds with his older roommate Skip. When Skip dares him to explore Chicago nightlife, Jonathan starts to chart a more independent path, venturing into cocktail lounges where he meets an alluring older woman named Ellen. Their age gap and the power dynamics complicate his friendships and his sense of morality, even as Ellen becomes a teacher of sorts in the ways of adult life. A cheating scandal rocks the school, throwing the two young men into a maelstrom of suspicion and shifting loyalties. The film probes mentorship, desire, and the costs of growing up too quickly.
Directed by Lewis John Carlino, Class arrived in 1983 as an original screenplay by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, produced on a budget of about 7 million.
Class earned roughly 21.6 million at the worldwide box office against a 7 million budget, making it a modest but solid performer for its era and genre.
The film sits in the early 80s teen drama lane, with handling of mentorship and sexuality that resonates with some viewers; not a widely cited cultural touchstone, but it's part of the era's questing, morally fraught coming-of-age stories.
