About Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons
Cross Ange follows Angelise "Ange" Ikaruga Mitsuragi, a sheltered first princess in a world transformed by a technology called Mana that solved famine, war, and pollution. Her comfortable life collapses when she's revealed to be a Norma, someone who cannot use Mana and is cast out by society. Stripped of title and privilege, Ange is sent to a remote island where other Normas are stationed. She must adapt to hard labor and military routine while joining a ragged crew that pilots humanoid weapons called Para-mails to fight dragons from another dimension, and she must cope with trust issues.
Released in 2014, Cross Ange is an original TV anime created by Mitsuo Fukuda and Tatsuto Higuchi. It was conceived as an original series and showcases voice talent such as Nana Mizuki and Mamoru Miyano, mixing action and mature themes.
Cross Ange provoked heated discussion for its blunt mix of fanservice, violence, and social commentary. Scenes and character dynamics sparked debates about representation and power, while the show's tonal swings and provocative imagery kept it prominent in online conversations and fandoms long after broadcast, and inspired substantial fan discussion online.
Critical response was mixed to positive, and viewers gave it an average of 8.2/10 from 122 votes. Reviewers noted its energetic mecha action alongside themes of discrimination, identity, and authority. Many found the abrupt shifts between serious drama and eroticized content divisive, though supporters praised its boldness and emotional stakes.
Cross Ange didn't receive major mainstream awards, but its voice cast performances and production elements got attention in fan circles and genre roundups. It tended to fare better in popularity polls than in formal prize competitions, with DVD releases and merchandising helping sustain interest among dedicated viewers, with modest fan recognition.
