About Eek! The Cat
Eek! The Cat follows an overly enthusiastic purple cat whose eagerness to help rarely goes as planned. He means well and aims to make his little corner of the world brighter, but his good intentions usually trigger chaotic, slapstick results that affect friends and neighbors. The show mixes short, fast-paced gags with recurring bits, like his massive girlfriend Annabelle, the oddly affectionate Sharky the sharkdog, and Elmo the elk. Episodes also include offbeat supporting segments, such as the prehistoric Terrible Thunderlizards and the mysterious Klutter, a creature whose nature is part of the joke. The tone stays light and silly, aimed at kids but often winking at older viewers.
Released in 1992, the series was created by Savage Steve Holland and features Bill Kopp as the voice of Eek, Savage Steve Holland voicing Elmo the Elk, Elinor Donahue as Mom, E. G. Daily as Wendy, and Charlie Adler as J.B.
The show’s goofy opening, with the line "Koombaya, it's Eek the cat," and its parade of oddball characters made it a recognizable part of early 90s cartoon lineups. Several recurring segments, especially the Terrible Thunderlizards, stuck with audiences and helped the series stand out among Saturday morning offerings, earning a modest cult following among people who grew up with it.
Critics and viewers tended to respond to Eek! with mixed to positive feelings, reflected in an average user vote of 6.884 out of 10 from 125 votes. Reviewers pointed out the show’s anarchic humor, sight gags, and willingness to toy with pop culture references, while noting the slapstick often overshadowed deeper storytelling. Kids enjoyed the loud, visual comedy and the memorable characters.
Eek! didn’t rack up major industry awards, but it maintained a loyal audience and has been remembered fondly by fans of 90s animation. Its legacy lives mainly in nostalgia, reruns, and the small but steady appreciation among animation enthusiasts.
