About End of Days
Jericho Cane is a world weary former cop now working as a tough hired gun in a city on edge. When a mysterious client insists that a man who seems to speak through him has found a way to summon a bride for an ancient evil, Jericho is pulled into a case that is bigger than it first appears. As the hired protector, he follows a trail that bends through dim alleys, midnight mass, and occult rituals, all pointing toward a prophecy that could unleash catastrophic chaos if ignored. With time running out, Jericho must decide what he will risk to save a woman and, perhaps, humanity. The mission doubles as a test of his own cynicism and resolve today.
Directed by Peter Hyams, End of Days adapts Andrew W Marlowe's material into a late 1990s action horror fantasy. Schwarzenegger anchors the film with a hard boiled tough guy persona as the clock ticks toward an unspeakable confrontation for audiences.
Worldwide, End of Days grossed about 212 million dollars against a 100 million budget, underscoring solid mainstream appeal despite its pulp premise and mixed reviews, helping to cement Schwarzenegger's post action star status in markets for fans worldwide and beyond.
End of Days sits as a era of action horror hybrid that helped define a 90s trend of apocalyptic thrills set in an urban landscape. Its visuals and pace, mixing sacred imagery with street level grit, influenced later demon siege stories in mainstream cinema and left an imprint in crossovers.
While critics offered mixed takeaways, praising the brisk pace and Schwarzenegger's sturdy presence while noting the plot's pulpier stretches. The film wrestles with faith versus skepticism, sacrifice and redemption, the toll of violence, and the clockwork inevitability of a world on the brink. Its tone blends myth with grindhouse grit.
What Viewers Are Saying
Audience chatter cracks up at the over-the-top demon plot, big action scenes, and Arnies antihero energy as Jericho Cane. Satan in human form hunts Christine York at the stroke of midnight on millennium eve, with Robin Tunney as the destined bride and Gabriel Byrne chewing the scenery. It's a comic book style action horror, with a rugged ex-cop Jericho Cane, his partner Kevin Pollak, and a no-nonsense priest Rod Steiger tossed into pure pulp chaos. Some viewers call it a personal favorite Arnold flick for its wild energy and memorable set pieces, even if the story gets goofy and the tone dips into camp at times.
