About Extant
Molly Woods returns to Earth after spending a year alone on a solo space mission, and nothing about her life fits back into place. She has to reforge a relationship with her husband JD and a son, Ethan, who is an advanced android created during her absence. Strange symptoms and odd behavior haunt Molly after the mission, drawing scrutiny from medical teams, corporate overseers, and government agents. As she sorts through fragmented memories and mounting evidence, tensions within the family and around the project escalate, and personal mysteries start to ripple outward, raising stakes that reach well past the Woods household.
Premiered in 2014, Extant was created by Mickey Fisher and stars Halle Berry as Molly Woods, supported by Pierce Gagnon, Grace Gummer, Tyler Hilton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan among others.
The series received limited awards recognition and was not a major presence at top industry ceremonies; it didn’t collect high-profile wins, though individual performances and production elements were noted by some critics and genre-focused outlets.
Extant helped keep certain sci-fi topics in the public conversation, especially the idea of a synthetic child and what that means for family bonds. Halle Berry leading a network science fiction drama also drew attention, and the show sparked discussions about technology, parenting, and ethical limits for corporations developing humanlike machines.
Critical and audience reaction was mixed, reflected in an average vote of about 6.31/10 from 340 votes. Reviewers tended to praise the premise and performances while critiquing uneven plotting; recurring themes include the psychological aftermath of isolation in space, secrecy around experimental programs, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and the strain between personal loyalty and institutional power. The show balances domestic drama with speculative questions without settling every mystery neatly.
