About Fate/Apocrypha
A huge, altered Holy Grail War erupts decades after the original Fuyuki conflict. During World War II a mage stole a Grail, and the Yggdmillennia family later broke away from the Mages' Association with that relic as their banner. When the Association tried to recover the Grail they were routed, and the old system morphed into something far more dangerous. Two massive factions summon squads of Heroic Spirits to fight an expanded, team-based war, while a reluctant young homunculus named Sieg becomes entwined with fighters and ideals he never expected. The series follows the battles, alliances, and moral choices without resolving every mystery at once.
Released in 2017, the anime was directed by Yoshiyuki Asai and animated by A-1 Pictures. It adapts a light novel by Yuichirou Higashide, set in the Type-Moon universe created by Kinoko Nasu, and features an ensemble voice cast including Maaya Sakamoto and Natsuki Hanae.
The series didn't sweep major industry awards, but it secured a strong fan following and appeared frequently in seasonal anime popularity polls. Its cast and soundtrack received particular praise from viewers, even if mainstream prizes were limited.
As an expansion of the Fate multiverse, the show prompted lively debates among fans about its alternate-history choices, character pairings, and adaptations across manga, games, and merchandise. Several Servants and moments became popular in cosplay and online discussion, helping the series stick in the public eye beyond its broadcast window.
Critics and viewers gave mixed to positive reactions, reflected in a 7.4/10 vote average on some platforms. Many praised the large-scale battle choreography, voice performances, and the scope of the conflict, while others felt the pacing and sheer number of characters sometimes made emotional beats harder to land. The show repeatedly returns to questions of what heroism costs, how history shapes identity, and whether ideals can survive when war turns personal.
