About Frankenweenie
Victor is a bright but reserved student in a small town who adores his loyal dog Sparky. After a car accident takes Sparky away, the boy uses a homemade science trick to bring him back to life. The reanimated dog returns with energy and mischief, and Victor believes he has saved his best friend. But the town reacts with fear as Sparky's strange revival unsettles neighbors and pets alike. Rumors and suspicion spread, forcing Victor to juggle his desire to protect Sparky with the reality that tampering with life has consequences. To keep Sparky safe, he must hide his experiment, calm worried adults, and face the unintended fallout from his midnight revival. That bond is tested when Sparky's revival stirs jealousy and curiosity in the town, drawing in curious neighbors and giving Victor new responsibilities.
Directed by Tim Burton, Frankenweenie expands his 1984 short into a full length stop motion feature. The script is by John August, with art by Jørgen Klubien, and the movie uses a stark black and white look that echoes old horror films. The voice cast features Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short among others.
With a budget of 39 million, Frankenweenie earned about 81,493,846 worldwide. The modest but solid performance reflects a family friendly gothic title that found its audience through home video, theater runs, and a later Blu ray release.
Frankenweenie is praised for its handmade stop motion, its homage to early monster movies, and a restrained color scheme that feels timeless. The film stands out in Tim Burton's body of work for balancing sentiment with jokes and a spooky charm that still appeals to kids and adults.
Critics welcomed the craft and warmth, while some found the plot familiar. The story wrestles with grief and the ethics of reviving the dead, showing how a small town reacts when fear overtakes empathy. The result is a family film with real heart that lingers in memory.
