Lindsay Weir is a bright high school student who starts to question the path laid out for her and begins spending time with a rougher, looser group of classmates labeled the "freaks." Her younger brother Sam stays in his own orbit, hanging out with earnest, awkward friends who care about comics and science, the "geeks." The show splits its attention between those two worlds, showing school hallways, family tensions, and the small humiliations and triumphs that shape growing up, with humor and seriousness in nearly equal measure.
