About Freaky Friday
Tess Coleman is a busy single mother planning a wedding while her teenage daughter Anna pushes for independence and resents her mother's rules. They're always arguing over clothes, crushes and future plans, and Anna openly dislikes Tess's fiancé. Anna has a school crush that complicates her feelings, while Tess balances work, family and an upcoming marriage. After a chance encounter with a magical fortune cookie their minds swap and each wakes in the other's body, having to cope with school, work and adult responsibilities that used to seem routine. Living a day in one another's shoes helps them understand different pressures and alters how they relate, without giving away how the switch ends.
Directed by Mark Waters and released in 2003, Freaky Friday adapts Mary Rodgers' original novel and draws from the earlier film version. Screenplay credits include Leslie Dixon and Heather Hach, and the movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the lead roles.
It performed well at the box office, becoming a reliable family hit that broadened Lindsay Lohan's appeal and strengthened the studio's early 2000s comedy lineup. Its commercial success kept the title in wide circulation on home video and later on streaming platforms.
The Lohan-Curtis pairing became a reference point for mother-daughter comedies, and the updated body-swap premise entered pop culture shorthand for empathy-based humor. As a modern remake of a beloved story, it reintroduced the concept to a younger generation and it's still cited in TV callbacks and family film recommendations.
Critics generally praised the chemistry between the leads and the film's light comic tone, while some reviews wanted sharper satire. Viewers appreciated its straightforward look at parental pressure, teenage identity and role reversal. IMDb records a 6.6/10 rating from over 4,000 votes, a sign of steady audience fondness.
