About Full Moon
Mitsuki Kouyama loves singing more than anything, but a malignant tumor in her throat has silenced her voice and her dreams. Then two upbeat Shinigami arrive with a playful promise: they can give her a temporary chance to perform again, if she agrees to a strange bargain. Suddenly Mitsuki finds herself able to sing on a real stage and catch the attention of a fickle industry, all while keeping the truth about her illness hidden from teachers and friends. The deal also puts her in touch with Takuto Kira, a rising idol who inspires her to believe that life can still hold light and possibility. The story follows Mitsuki as friendship, health, and ambition collide with the lure of fame.
Based on Arina Tanemura's manga Full Moon o Sagashite, the series premiered in 2002 as an animated television adaptation. It translates Tanemura's early 2000s shoujo sensibilities into music driven scenes and character focused drama.
While not a blockbuster, the show is remembered for blending pop music with supernatural elements in a heartfelt coming of age setting. It helped popularize the idea that a young artist could shape her fate through talent and perseverance.
Critics praised its sensitive look at illness and the costs of chasing a dream, plus its warm friendships and memorable songs. The series examines identity, hope, and the balance between living fully today and planning for tomorrow.
What Viewers Are Saying
Fans call Full Moon wo Sagashite a bittersweet blend of cute shoujo energy and real heartbreak, centered on Mitsuki the sickly girl who dreams of singing and the two shinigami who help her. The music pulls you in, with songs that carry the mood from bright and playful to quiet and painful. Many feel the anime improves on the manga with tighter pacing and stronger character chemistry. The show sticks with you because it balances hopeful moments with illness and loss, making you smile at the goofy bits and ache at the harder truths.
