About Geostorm
After a string of catastrophic weather events pushes world leaders to action, nations band together to fund a sweeping satellite network that can tune Earth's climate from space. The project promises safety and stability, but the system soon behaves as if it has a mind of its own. A multinational team of engineers and officials, led by Jake Lawson, races to track down the source of the disruption before a geostorm blanket covers the planet. Clues lead them around the globe as they hunt a saboteur and a hidden flaw that could turn a life saving invention into a weapon of mass destruction. As the clock ticks, trust between allies frays and personal loyalties are tested. The mission tests loyalties.
Released in 2017, Geostorm is directed by Dean Devlin, based on a concept by Paul Guyot. The cast includes Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara and Ed Harris. It aims for brisk suspense and a tense camaraderie.
Worldwide, the film grossed about 221,600,160 dollars against a 120 million budget, marking a solid return for a mid range science fiction thriller despite mixed reviews in some markets. International audiences helped offset domestic fluctuations across European and Asian markets.
Geostorm stands out in the climate disaster subgenre for its glossy visual effects and a fast moving globe spanning setup. The film helped keep conversations about weather control in popular cinema and many viewers remember its large scale chase sequences. That look influenced later climate disaster scenes in other films.
On balance critics gave a mixed reaction, praising the movie's pace and visuals while questioning its plausibility and character depth. The story threads themes of hubris, global cooperation, and the hazards of letting technology steer critical decisions. It invites talk about accountability in a connected world and restraint in policy.
What Viewers Are Saying
Geostorm splits audiences, trying to be a big action SF about a climate control project but spending most of its time on politics and corporate scheming instead of straight up blowups. Gerard Butler comes off as a super scientist and the dialogue leans on cheesy explanations rather than real tension. The disaster show arrives mainly in the last 20 minutes, while the middle drags with budgets, international politics and tech jargon. If you want a pure popcorn ride you might enjoy the silliness, but expect a letdown if you came for credible science or tight plotting.
