Colonel Robert Gould Shaw is put in charge of the Union army's first all-black volunteer regiment, the 54th Massachusetts. He has to weld together men from different backgrounds, including freedmen and free Black citizens, while facing suspicion from his own officers and contempt from opponents. Training, patrols, and small engagements reveal fractures within the unit as loyalties shift and tensions rise.
