About God of War Zhao Yun
Zhao Zi Long rises from battlefield legend to one of Liu Bei's most trusted generals during the chaotic end of the Eastern Han and the birth of the Three Kingdoms. After an early stint under warlord Gongsun Zan he switches allegiance to Liu Bei, earning renown for daring strikes and steady leadership as one of the Five Tiger Generals. The series follows his campaigns and the loyalties that shape his career, but it also puts his private life under strain when he becomes entangled in a romantic triangle with the beautiful Xiahou Qing Yi and warrior Gao Ze. His battlefield exploits win admiration but bring heavy responsibilities and personal costs.
Produced and released in 2016, the series was directed by Cheng Lidong, Guo Jianyong and Yuan Yingming, created by Li Lizhuo, Ying Ning and Yong Zheng, and filmed in Mandarin for mainland China with focus on action and battle sequences.
While not a mainstream international hit, the show prompted conversation for its pan-Asian casting, featuring Korean stars Yoona and Kim Jeong-hoon, and for its modernized take on a familiar hero. Online fans debated historical accuracy and praised the leads' on-screen chemistry, especially among K-pop and historical drama communities.
Critical and audience response was mixed, with a modest average score of 6.5/10 from a small sample of viewers. The drama focuses on duty, personal honor, loyalty and the costs of love, pairing large-scale combat set pieces with melodramatic romance, occasional uneven pacing, and period costumes that some viewers praised.
The series did not register major awards or high-profile nominations in international prize circuits, and it didn't gain significant recognition at prominent television award shows. It did attract niche fan polls and online appreciation for the leads' performances and action choreography, and some domestic outlets covered its release.
