Golden Door

At the start of the 1900s in rural Sicily, Salvatore Mancuso, a poor widower, decides to pull his family toward the American dream. Before they leave, they cross paths with Luce, a woman who says she is British and longs to cross the Atlantic again. Luce asks Salvatore to marry her before they reach Ellis Island, and he agrees hoping it will secure a safer future for his children. On the voyage they endure cramped conditions and wary officials while dreams of prosperity clash with harsh reality. When the group lands in New York, the real test begins as they face the medical and legal exams that decide who enters the country. Their bond is tested as the crossing unfolds.

Directed by Emanuele Crialese, Golden Door released in 2006 as original screenplay inspired by emigration. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Luce, with Vincenzo Amato as Salvatore and Aurora Quattrocchi as Fortunata, while Francesco Casisa and Filippo Pucillo fill supporting Mancuso roles.
