About Grimm
Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt's life flips when he discovers a hidden inheritance: he comes from a line of Grimms, people who can see the true, often monstrous forms of certain humans. As Nick tries to keep solving murders, he must also learn how to identify and handle Wesen, creatures who hide in plain sight. Balancing police procedure with secret supernatural rules pulls him into alliances with unlikely helpers, including a reformed Wesen who teaches him restraint, and a partner who insists on normalcy. The series mixes case-of-the-week investigations with a slow-burn arc about family duty, loyalty, and what it means to use power responsibly, without revealing key turning points.
Created by David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf and Stephen Carpenter, Grimm premiered on NBC in 2011 and ran for six seasons, concluding in 2017. The show was produced by Universal Television and blended procedural TV pacing with serialized mythology over its run.
The series earned attention from genre-focused award groups, receiving nominations for its makeup, creature effects, and ensemble work. Those technical and craft recognitions highlighted the series' practical creature design and the team effort behind bringing the Wesen to life.
Grimm left a visible mark on pop culture in the fantasy TV space. Its distinctive creature designs and the concept of a detective who sees fairy-tale beings showed up in fan art, conventions and cosplay. Filming in Portland gave the city recurring visibility, and the show helped cement a niche for darker, folklore-tinged television that mixes crime drama with myth.
Critics and fans generally reacted positively, reflected in a strong average user score. Reviewers praised the chemistry among the main cast and the way procedural cases fed into a larger mythology. Recurring themes include heritage versus personal choice, the ethics of policing hidden communities, and the tension between human law and older, secret codes. The tone shifts between light moments and moral gray areas, keeping the series varied across episodes and seasons.
