Humanity's first steps beyond the solar system run into a brutal reality when a vast swarm of insectoid invaders, known as Space Monsters, begins closing in on Earth. In response, society builds towering combat machines that only a handful of specially chosen youths can pilot. Noriko Takaya, whose father was a celebrated space captain, signs up for a harsh training program despite shaky natural talent. At the academy she meets the poised and gifted Kazumi Amano, and the two are paired together on missions that test their skill and their nerves. The show follows frontline battles, the emotional cost of prolonged conflict on young pilots, and how partnership and rivalry shift as danger mounts, without giving away major plot turns.
