About Hero of the Wild
Tu Tashan is a celebrated regional fighter who earns his living by settling scores for pay, but he follows a strict code of honor. Determined to unify his title with rival champion Nan Pa Tien, he takes on the best challengers he meets along the way. After a victory leaves an opponent so ashamed he takes his own life, Tu Tashan is asked to strike at a group of Manchu loyalists tied to Nan Pa Tien. When the dead man's son, Sa Woo, seeks revenge and fails, Tu Tashan agrees to train him. The two head off together, one man driven by duty to a dying request, the other by a vow to avenge his father.
Released in 1977, the film was directed by William Cheung Kei and credits Ni Kuang and Chang Hsin-Yi as creators. The cast includes Chan Sing as Tu Tashan, Hwang Jang-Lee, Doris Lung Chun-Erh, Yuen Biao and Hua Chung Ting, showcasing familiar faces from martial arts cinema.
Box office figures for the movie aren't well documented, and it didn't register as a major international commercial success. Its theatrical reach appears limited to regional markets and grindhouse circuits, so it never broke into mainstream box office lists.
Among kung fu fans the picture has a modest reputation, mainly for its straight-ahead fight scenes and for featuring performers who later became cult favorites. It turns up in discussions of 1970s action fare and collectors of vintage martial arts films often cite it as an example of the era's raw, no-frills style.
Critical reaction was mixed to lukewarm, reflected in a low average user rating. The film leans on clear themes of honor, revenge, mentorship and loyalty, with its emotional beats centered on promises and the moral code that guides violent men. Audiences expecting polished choreography or big production values may find it rougher, but fans of period martial arts storytelling will recognize familiar genre elements.
