About Hi-Five
One dark night a body donated for organ transplants vanishes into ash. Soon after, five recipients awaken with extraordinary abilities. A teenage girl discovers super strength, a hipster can bend electromagnetic waves, a novelist conjures gusts of wind, a factory manager heals with his touch, and a woman unlocks a mysterious power. They form HI-FIVE, a reluctant but capable team determined to help others and face threats together. But they aren’t the only ones transformed. A cult leader who received the pancreas gains life draining power and sets sights on stealing HI-FIVE's gifts to rule with godlike control. Along the way they clash with misunderstandings, groups, and a citywide mystery that tests whether power is a gift or a trap.
Directed by Kang Hyoung-chul and Yoo Sung-kwon, Hi-Five arrives as an original concept rather than a straight adaptation, blending brisk action, offbeat humor, and fantasy elements within a Korean genre cinema framework. The project also marks a collaboration of rising Korean talents. The cast includes Lee Jae-in, Ahn Jae-hong, Yoo Ah-in, Ra Mi-ran, and Kim Hie-won.
With a budget of 14,450,000, the film grossed 14,125,640 worldwide, signaling a modest return that suits its niche appeal rather than a global blockbuster. Distribution details emphasize streaming and regional premieres, with a modest but steady audience attracted to its action comedy blend.
Critics call it brisk and entertaining, balancing high energy set pieces with character driven humor. The story probes power and responsibility, friendship under pressure, and how ordinary people adapt when life changes in an instant. It also delves into the ethics of power and the loneliness that can come with sudden gifts, adding some measured moral weight to the action.
As a 2025 release, its long term cultural footprint remains to be seen. Early fans praise HI-FIVE as a fresh team-up that could inspire sequels or spin-offs, as well as a trend toward more ensemble fantasy in Korean cinema.
