About Hop
On the surface, Hop follows E.B., the Easter Bunny's teenage son, who dreams of drums and rock stardom rather than candy and baskets. He sneaks away from his glossy holiday world and heads for Los Angeles in search of a chance to audition with a real band. The trip collides with reality when a weary human named Fred, a down on his luck slacker, accidentally hits E.B. with his car and ends up hosting him in his apartment. The pair stumble through loud music, odd gigs, and comic misadventures as they chase fame, facing cranky producers, eccentric performers, and the pull between obligations at home and wild dreams and friends. They also meet odd memorable characters along the way, unexpected.
Directed by Tim Hill and released in 2011 by Universal Pictures, Hop comes from an original story by Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch. Russell Brand voices E.B., with James Marsden, Kaley Cuoco and Hank Azaria in supporting roles.
It grossed 183,953,723 worldwide against a 63,000,000 budget, and benefited from holiday season demand and broad family appeal, helping Universal Pictures secure a solid return on its animated gamble across screens and reinforcing the studio's faith in family friendly franchises.
Critics gave mixed to positive notes highlighting the voice work and energetic musical numbers while noting a familiar, kid friendly plot. Some praised its breezy humor and bright visuals, while others called the setup familiar. The film treats friendship, perseverance and balancing dreams with family obligations as its core themes.
Hop stands out for pairing a CGI Easter Bunny with action Los Angeles and a driven vibe. The shift from holiday parody to music fuels humor and heart. Russell Brand's performance and the musical set pieces became a talking point among families, though it did not leave a footprint globally.
