About In the Dark
Murphy Mason is a sarcastic, messy, and stubborn woman who also happens to be blind. After her friend Tyson is killed, she becomes the only person who can point to what happened, but police don't take her seriously. Refusing to stay sidelined, Murphy drags her dog Pretzel into amateur sleuthing, following leads, questioning dangerous people, and breaking rules to get answers. Alongside the investigation she juggles a rocky dating life, a job she dislikes at a guide-dog school run by overprotective parents, and relationships with a tight circle of friends who both help and complicate her plans.
Created by Corinne Kingsbury, the series premiered in 2019 and stars Perry Mattfeld as Murphy, with Morgan Krantz, Casey Deidrick, Keston John, and Theodore Bhat in supporting roles. The show was produced for television and ran across multiple seasons, blending crime drama with dark comedy.
The series didn't rack up major industry awards, though viewers and some critics singled out Mattfeld's performance for bringing humor and edge to a difficult lead. It received attention more for its storytelling and character work than for trophies.
"In the Dark" prompted conversations about disability representation on TV, since its central character is a blind woman who is flawed and active rather than purely inspirational. The relationship between Murphy and her guide dog Pretzel became a recognizable element, and the show's tone inspired fan discussion on social media about how disability is written into mainstream genre television.
Critics and audiences gave mixed to positive responses, reflected in an average rating around 7.75 out of 10 from voter scores. Reviewers noted the series mixes noir-style crime plotting with dark humor and relationship drama, and it repeatedly raises questions about trust, moral compromise, and how someone with an intellectual disability is portrayed in suspenseful, everyday situations.
