About Magical Project S
In the enchanted realm of Juraihelm, Tsunami stands in line for the crown but must prove she can choose someone who will make the world better. Sasami Kawai, a reserved girl who helps in her mother’s shop, is sent to deliver a CD to a gloomy mansion, and there she meets Tsunami. Tsunami gifts Sasami with magical abilities and sends the odd little companion Ryo-Ohki along as a guide. Sasami must learn to juggle school, family obligations, and sudden superhero duties while figuring out what being a magical girl really means. Meanwhile Tsunami’s rival Ramia manufactures trouble, creating Pixy Misa to block Sasami and tilt the contest for the crown.
Magical Project S premiered as an animated TV series in 1996. The show mixes comedy and sci-fi fantasy, and the voice cast includes Etsuko Kozakura as Ryo-Ohki, Chisa Yokoyama as Sasami Kawai, Rumi Kasahara as Pixy Misa, Maya Okamoto as Ramia, and Tomoko Ishimura as Rumiya.
The series did not collect major industry awards or high-profile nominations. Instead it circulated primarily through broadcasts and home video, attracting viewers for its character moments rather than for accolades or critical prizes.
Though never a blockbuster, the show still turns up in conversations about 90s anime that played with genre expectations. Viewers often remember its light parody of magical girl conventions, the comic timing of side characters, and the way it blends slice-of-life scenes with sudden magical misadventures.
Audience reaction is mixed, reflected in a modest average rating near 6.1 out of 10 from a small number of votes. Fans tend to enjoy the humor, the rivalry between Tsunami and Ramia, and Sasami’s awkward but earnest growth, while critics point to uneven pacing and a relatively simple plot. Major themes include friendship, responsibility, and the contrast between ordinary life and magical obligations.
