About Major 2nd
Daigo Shigeno is an elementary schooler who grew up in the shadow of his father Gorō, a celebrated professional who once played abroad. Early on Daigo tries little league with the Mifune Dolphins but quits after struggling to meet the expectations that come with his family name. He keeps his distance from the game until the spring of his sixth-grade year, when Hikaru Satō, a lively transfer student and son of Gorō's old teammate Toshiya Satō, arrives. Hikaru's easy confidence and natural talent slowly pull Daigo back toward baseball. The series follows friendship, rivalry, and everyday team life as Daigo works out what he actually wants, without revealing later outcomes.
Released in 2018, Major 2nd adapts Takuya Mitsuda's manga and credits Michihiro Tsuchiya alongside Mitsuda as creators. It's a continuation of the Major franchise that shifts attention to a new generation of players while keeping the family ties and baseball fundamentals that defined the original.
The show holds a 7.9/10 user rating from 16 votes, indicating generally positive fan response. Viewers often point to strong character work and believable practice and game sequences, and appreciate the focus on how legacy and expectations shape young players. The series emphasizes teamwork, personal choice, and the quieter moments of growing up in competitive youth sports.
As a follow-up to a long-running sports property, Major 2nd helped reconnect older fans with fresh protagonists and kept baseball anime in the conversation. It reinforced common sports-anime themes like mentorship and club culture, and for many viewers it offered a more grounded, relatable depiction of youth baseball compared with high-drama competition titles.
Major 2nd hasn't featured prominently in major industry award coverage, yet it carved out a steady niche among sports anime audiences. Its impact is often measured through fan engagement, online discussion, and appreciation from viewers who value detailed portrayals of training, teamwork, and adolescent development.
