About Neue Vahr Süd

Frank Lehmann is a twenty year old who still lives with his parents in the gray high rise district called Neue Vahr in Bremen. It's 1980 and he is about to be drafted, though his friends say he isn't really army material. After a rushed first week in uniform, his father converts his old room into a TV repair shop, leaving Frank to find a new place. He reconnects with an old friend who's starting a punk influenced commune in Bremen's Viertel quarter, and Frank ends up renting a cramped room there. From then on he drifts between two very different worlds, trying not to stand out yet bungling his attempts to belong in both the military and the commune.

Directed by Hermine Huntgeburth, Neue Vahr Süd is a 2010 German television comedy adapted from Sven Regener's Neue Vahr Süd, with screenplays by Christian Zübert and Sven Regener. It brings Regener's Bremen world to the screen with a light, affectionate touch.

Box office data is not applicable for this television film; Neue Vahr Süd premiered on German TV and did not post a theatrical worldwide gross.

There are no major awards listed for this title in standard databases. Reception and themes: Critics describe the film as a dryly funny look at adolescence and the pull of two clashing worlds. Set in 1980 Bremen, it probes identity and belonging, balancing military discipline with punk idealism through understated humor and solid performances, especially from the lead. The tone is gentle rather than abrasive, and it offers a human portrait of a young man negotiating expectations.
