About Noryang: Deadly Sea
Winter winds tighten around the shores of the late 1590s as Admiral Yi Sun-shin commands a joint Joseon and Ming fleet. In the seventh year of the Imjin War, word spreads that the Wa invaders are planning to pull back after the dying words of their leader, yet Yi refuses to let the retreat become victory for their enemies. He orders a strict blockade to pin the Wa forces at sea and prevent any quick regrouping. As the fleets prepare for a decisive face off, a new complication looms when rival forces move toward the Noryang Strait, threatening to interrupt the blockade and test the resolve of every sailor and commander aboard. Their resolve faces storms and danger ahead tonight.
Directed by Kim Han-min and written with his collaborators, Noryang draws on historic events from the Imjin War. The project brings together star Kim Yun-seok as Admiral Yi Sun-shin with a large ensemble, backed by production values and period detail.
Box office returns place the film at about 34.21 million dollars worldwide, against a reported budget of 40 million. The figure reflects a solid showing for a historical war epic rather than a runaway blockbuster in the global market today.
Admiral Yi Sun-shin remains one of Korea's best known war heroes, and this film adds a cinematic chapter to his legacy. Its scale and battle sequences may influence future naval dramas, while the cast and production design reinforce a sense of national pride tied to history. Across generations resonance endures.
Critics have a mixed take on the film, praising its scale and performances while calling attention to heavy wartime drama and dense plotting. Themes center on leadership under pressure, loyalty to allies, the human cost of conflict, and the tension between strategy and sacrifice on open waters for audiences worldwide.
