Vic McQueen discovers she can open portals, called inscapes, that let her locate things people thought were gone. As she learns to control this eerie gift, she meets others with the same ability, some who use it to help and some who become dangerous. Her life changes when she encounters Charlie Manx, an unnerving, ageless figure who entices and takes children to feed his immortality. Vic's talent and Manx's predations create a long-running conflict that pulls her into a hidden, unsettling layer of the world, forcing her to confront past losses and decide how far she'll go to stop someone who preys on innocence.
