About O, What a Night!
Wholesaler Berggren's daughter Elin goes to Örebro to spend her honeymoon with her new husband Efraim, but the trip quickly goes sideways. The couple take separate rooms at a provincial hotel and late that night Elin finds another woman in Efraim's bed, so she returns home at once and leaves questions hanging. Back in town, her sister Irma is being courted by the charming Klas, who can't seem to stop thinking about his former fiancée. The film keeps the tone light, building a series of awkward encounters, gossip and comic misunderstandings that involve relatives and local hotel staff, with the emphasis on social manners and farcical confusion rather than serious drama.
Released in 1937, O, What a Night! was directed by Anders Henrikson and based on material by Weyler Hildebrand and Torsten Lundqvist, featuring a cast of popular Swedish comic actors. It was produced for Swedish audiences, aimed at domestic viewers.
Box office figures for this 1930s Swedish comedy are scarce, with no reliable nationwide gross recorded; many films of the period have limited commercial documentation in archives. Today it circulates mainly in archival screenings and retrospectives rather than commercial re-releases, so commercial impact is hard to gauge.
Modern ratings are mixed, it's holding a modest 4.5/10 from a small number of votes. Critics and viewers tend to note its emphasis on misunderstandings, social manners, slapstick and light domestic satire rather than deep character study. Contemporary reviews are scarce, and coverage focused on its light entertainment value.
Though not widely known internationally today, O, What a Night! preserves the comic styles of its leading performers, including Thor Modéen and Sickan Carlsson, and serves as an example of Swedish popular cinema and stage-influenced farce from the 1930s. Some historians cite it for its showcase of period comic performers.
