About Om Shanti Om
On a Bollywood set decades ago, a cheerful supporting actor named Om Prakash Makhija hustles for screen time while dreaming of big fame. A mysterious fire consumes the chance-laden on screen romance of a glamorous star, Shantipriya, and the tragedy leaves a trail of unanswered questions. Thirty years later, Om is reborn into a new life in the glamorous world of cinema, carrying memories of his past life and a stubborn resolve. He returns as Om Kapoor, a younger man with the same stubborn hope, drawn to the film world he once inhabited. He believes the blaze was no accident and sees a chance to expose the culprit while moving through memorable songs and humor that lampoons vintage and contemporary cinema.
Directed by Farah Khan, Om Shanti Om released in 2007 as a Bollywood musical comedy thriller that pays affectionate homage to 1970s cinema while mixing farce, romance, and high energy dancing in sizzling color, including a signature dance sequence today.
The movie grossed roughly 37.7 million dollars worldwide against a 9.1 million budget, marking a strong box office showing for a mid career star and a director whose playful nods to Bollywood history resonated with audiences and cemented its stardom.
Om Shanti Om is remembered for its self aware humor and lavish production numbers, including the title track that riffs on Bollywood nostalgia. Hema Malini makes a cameo that feels like a wink to fans, and the film sparked renewed interest in classic era styling among fans of all ages.
Critics praised its glossy energy and blend of spoof with sincere emotion, while noting uneven pacing at times. The film explores fame and reincarnation as a punchy two layered concept so it stages both satire of industry tropes and a heartfelt longing for lost love with a hopeful, entertaining tone.
