About One Piece

When the Pirate King Gol D. Roger is executed, he leaves behind the greatest treasure in the world, the One Piece, and a single prize: whoever claims it becomes King of the Pirates. Monkey D. Luffy, a cheerful kid who ate a Devil Fruit that made his body rubbery, sets out to chase that prize and his idol's spirit. Along the way he recruits a motley crew — a swordsman, a thief-turned-navigator, a sharpshooter, a cook and others — each with their own ambitions. The show mixes broad humor with violent, cinematic fights as the Straw Hat crew sails through strange islands, political corruption, and ancient mysteries, driven by Luffy's stubborn optimism while holding back later twists.

Adapted from Eiichiro Oda's long-running manga, One Piece premiered in 1999 and is produced by Toei Animation. The anime has aired for decades on Japanese television and features voice leads Mayumi Tanaka, Kazuya Nakai, Akemi Okamura, Kappei Yamaguchi, and Hiroaki Hirata.

One Piece became a cultural phenomenon, influencing cosplay, collectibles, and countless creators. Luffy's oft-repeated line "I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!" is instantly recognizable, and many scenes and character designs have been memed, recreated and referenced across gaming, film and fashion, helping cement shonen tropes for a global audience.

The series holds a strong audience rating, 8.721/10 from 5,094 votes, and is praised for vast worldbuilding, tonal range from silly to somber, and its focus on friendship, freedom and personal dreams. Viewers note the long-form storytelling, multi-episode arcs and morally complex villains, which reward sustained watching and repeated viewing.

Across its run One Piece has earned numerous industry recognitions and milestone acknowledgments for popularity, longevity and influence. Its commercial success and sustained fan engagement have led to awards, bestseller lists and record-setting manga sales, underscoring its role as one of anime and manga's defining franchises.
