When the head of a powerful business group begins searching for a successor, two ambitious young executives clash over the prize. Daniel Bastos comes from humble roots, with a good heart and the skills to match, while Olavo Novaes is ruthless and ready to cheat to win. Daniel finds an ally in Paula, a sensitive woman who learns on the eve of her mother's death that she was adopted and carries a secret that will upend her life. Unknown to Paula, an identical twin, Taís, shares her face but not her morals, and she teams up with Olavo to pursue power. Meanwhile, the aging magnate Antenor discovers a late chance at love with Lúcia, whose honesty challenges his cold worldview.
