About Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment
Fresh from the Police Academy, Carey Mahoney and his fellow graduates head out on their first real assignment. They're a cheerful, imperfect squad whose confidence often outstrips their training, and their task seems simple enough: track down a gang of graffiti taggers terrorizing the city. Yet the mission quickly becomes a slapstick scramble as miscommunications, careening entrances, and improvised stunts keep tripping them up. The team learns to rely on each other, bluff their way through checkpoints, and cobble together quick solutions in a string of comic set pieces. The movie leans into fast paced gags, practical effects, and the warmth of camaraderie that makes the chaos feel harmlessly fun. The laughs come fast and the stakes stay light tonight.
Directed by Jerry Paris, the sequel preserves the ensemble prankster tone of the original. Writers Neal Israel Pat Proft and Barry W Blaustein return to craft the police academy capers, building on a familiar blueprint that proved popular in theaters.
Box office tallies show the film grossed about 55.6 million dollars worldwide globally on a 7.6 million dollar budget. The solid performance reinforced the franchise value during the mid 80s and helped spawn further installments in the Police Academy series.
As part of the growing Police Academy franchise, this entry helped cement a specific era of broad street humor that married goofy teamwork with slapstick stunts. It fed audience appetite for sequels, cameo moments, and a parade of silly crime capers that defined 1980s comedy. Its influence lingered across genres.
Critics at the time treated it as disposable popcorn, yet the ensemble work keeps the pace sprightly. The film foregrounds teamwork, improvised problem solving, and the idea that well meaning amateurs can outsmart obstacles through teamwork. Its light tone and pratfalls left a lasting record for mid 80s comedy worldwide.
What Viewers Are Saying
People say Police Academy 2 is a breezy upgrade over the first, with most of the gang back but Harris and Callahan missing and Lt Mauser plus Proctor stirring the pot. The highlights for many are the Kirkland family chaos, a sticky black sock gag, Zed leading a street gang played by Bob Goldthwait, and a sushi bar scene that lands a few big laughs. Steve Guttenberg seems sharper this time around while Winslow is underused, and the 80 minute runtime keeps things light even if some jokes don’t click as well as in the original.
