About Psychic Squad
Three precocious espers sit at the heart of this light hearted anime that mixes comedy with a pinch of science fiction. Kaoru is impulsive and can bend objects with the power of her mind. Shiho uses a sharper sense to read minds and uncover memories hidden in things. Aoi stays calm and practical and can teleport herself and others when needed. Together they are mentored by Koichi Minamoto, a tired despite caring field operative who has to corral these three kids and keep their powers from spiraling out of control. The operation runs at B A B E L, the Base of Backing ESP Laboratory, a place meant to shape talent into responsible use while navigating life at school together. Humor comes from clumsy adolescence clashing with big ideas and the occasional punch line about using power at the wrong moment.
This 2008 animated comedy comes from Takashi Shiina and Satoru Nishizono. It presents an original TV concept rather than a direct adaptation, using a light playful tone to explore how gifted kids balance power, friendship, and everyday life and duties.
Being a TV series, Psychic Squad did not have a theatrical box office run and there are no film grosses to report. Its reach is measured through TV broadcasts, streaming, and home video rather than cinema revenue outside Japan altogether.
Among niche anime fans the premise drew attention for its quirky mix of school life and super powers, helped by a memorable voice cast. It never became a major cultural touchstone or spawned widespread memes, but it did land as a cult curiosity for some viewers around the mid 2000s.
Critical reception centered on lighthearted humor and the balance between power and responsibility. The show leans on character chemistry and fast paced gags, using the lab setting to frame moral questions about control, teamwork, and growing up with extraordinary gifts. Its tone stays breezy and inviting, never getting too dark.
