About Punch Line

Yūta Iridatsu is a high schooler whose spirit has been separated from his body, leaving him wandering a peculiar mansion called Koraikan. A catlike spirit named Chiranosuke tells Yūta he has to recover the Sacred Tome hidden in the house to return to his physical form. As he explores crowded corridors he keeps accidentally coming into contact with the underwear of the mansion's female residents, and each mishap sets off bizarre, global-scale calamities. The series follows his attempts to understand Koraikan's strange rules, protect the people he meets, and piece together why his astral projection happened, with a steady mix of slapstick, surreal sci-fi setups, and character-driven moments. Yūta must also cope with being disembodied.

Punch Line aired in 2015 and was created by Kotaro Uchikoshi. The animation blends comedy and sci-fi, and the main cast includes Marina Inoue, Sora Amamiya, Minako Kotobuki, Rie Kugimiya and Haruka Tomatsu in key voice roles.

The series did not receive major industry awards or high-profile nominations, so it wasn't part of awards season coverage. That said, parts of the anime and its creative premise were discussed at fan gatherings and within niche online communities, where viewers debated its strengths and awkward choices.

Punch Line became best known for the outlandish rule that seeing female underwear triggers catastrophic events, a gag that produced many memes and heated forum threads. Its willingness to mix risqué fanservice with sci-fi weirdness made it a touchstone for conversations about taste, tone and shock humor in anime.

Critical and fan reaction was mixed, reflected by a modest user score of 5.8/10. People praised moments of originality, speedy pacing and bold ideas, while others pointed to uneven plotting and excessive fanservice. The show returns to themes of identity, responsibility, friendship and how small actions can have disproportionate consequences.
