On a rough Manchester council estate a group of siblings are left to raise themselves after their parents largely abandon them. They survive through improvisation and dark humor, juggling petty schemes, school, and the chaos at home. The oldest sister keeps the household together while a middle class newcomer, Steve, begins a relationship with her, bringing moments of tenderness and friction. Much of the story is filtered through the perspective of an unusually sharp fifteen-year-old who watches a belligerent, alcoholic father, a brother who hides his sexuality, chaotic neighbors, and volatile family dynamics, all while trying to grow up faster than he wants to.
