About Shattered
Dan Merrick awakens after a brutal car crash only to discover his memory has vanished. He learns he is married to Judith, a patient wife who promises to help him rebuild a life that feels unfamiliar yet forces him to keep moving. Vague flashes haunt him—sharp images of places and faces that do not yet fit into a coherent story. He encounters Gus Klein, a pet shop owner who also acts as a part time private investigator and claims to have done work for Dan before the accident. With Klein's notes and Judith's guarded support, Dan begins to piece together a past that may not be reliable, leaving him unsure what to believe and who to trust.
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, Shattered arrived in 1991 with a screenplay by Richard Neely built from an original idea. The film blends Petersen's efficient suspense craft with a character driven mystery that keeps the viewer guessing as memories collide with reality.
Box Office: The movie earned about 11.5 million worldwide against a 22 million budget, a modest result for a psychological thriller released by a major studio.
Awards: The picture did not receive major nominations. Tom Berenger delivers a guarded performance as the memory troubled Dan, supported by Bob Hoskins whose offbeat presence adds a sly edge to the investigation, Greta Scacchi and the rest of the cast rounding out the tense atmosphere.
Reception & Themes: Critics treated Shattered as a solid if conventional thriller that leans on mood rather than big surprises. The core themes revolve around memory and identity and the fragile nature of trust when what you think you know keeps shifting. The performances, especially Berenger and Hoskins, provide the ballast that keeps the plot moving through its twists.
