About Slayers

Lina Inverse is a sharp-tongued young sorceress who cares about three things: food, treasure, and a good fight. After she lifts a haul from a band of thieves, a few stragglers try to catch up with her on the road to the next town. She’s outmatched only in patience, not power, until Gourry Gabriev, a big-hearted but not-very-bright swordsman, shows up and slices the troublemakers down. The pair decide to travel together toward Atlas City, taking odd jobs and clobbering monsters as they go. Unseen pursuers trail them, interested in that particular treasure, and each episode mixes slapstick, swordplay, and magic without giving away long-term surprises.

Created from Hajime Kanzaka’s light novels with character designs by Rui Araizumi, the 1995 TV adaptation features Megumi Hayashibara as Lina Inverse, Yasunori Matsumoto as Gourry, Masami Suzuki as Amelia, and Hikaru Midorikawa as Zelgadis, among others.

The show helped make Lina a recognizable heroine of 90s anime, thanks to a mix of loud humor and over-the-top spell effects. Its episodes, OVAs, and movies kept fans talking, and the series remains a frequent reference in fan circles and retro anime discussions.

Critics and viewers tend to praise the series for its quick comic timing, energetic fight choreography, and the chemistry among the main quartet. On one review aggregator it holds a 7.404/10 from 48 votes, reflecting a steady appreciation from fans who like genre mashups that swing from silly to surprisingly dark in a single scene.

While Slayers didn’t rack up major international awards, it earned a durable reputation within anime communities and spawned several spin-offs and films. That continued output helped cement its status as a long-running franchise, keeping the characters and their outrageous magic in circulation across home video and conventions.

Slayers is a Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, and Animation series.

No, Slayers is a work of fantasy based on the light novels by Hajime Kanzaka, with character designs by Rui Araizumi. It mixes magic, monsters, and comedic adventure rather than real events.

The simplest approach is to watch the TV seasons in release order: Slayers (season 1), Slayers Next, Slayers TRY, Slayers Revolution, then Slayers Evolution-R. The movies and OVAs are mostly standalone side stories, so you can watch them after the first TV season or follow release order without losing the main plot.

"Dragon Slave" is a high-level black magic spell that causes massive destructive energy and is treated as a forbidden, dangerous attack in the series. It's used both as a serious combat move and as a running gag because of its overwhelming power and Lina's casual attitude toward it.

Slayers mixes slapstick comedy with fantasy violence and occasional suggestive humor, so it's generally aimed at teens and older viewers. Parents may want to preview episodes for younger children to decide if the tone and jokes are appropriate.
