About Sleeper
Sleeper plays like a wild blend of Woody Allen wit and zany science fiction, but it also maps a satire of modern life in a distant, ridiculous future. Miles Monroe, a clarinetist who also runs a health food shop, is cryogenically revived centuries ahead of his time. He lands in a regime obsessed with control, consumerism and cosmetic progress, where free thinking is a crime and clinics push fashionable fixations. Miles teams with Luna Schlosser, a fearless ally who guides him through a society built on absurd technology and bureaucratic silliness. The tone oscillates between slapstick and sly social commentary as Miles tries to fit in and cling to his world sensibilities and humor as the future projects its quirks.
Directed by Woody Allen with co writer Marshall Brickman, Sleeper released in 1973 as a fast paced, inventive satire that fuses romance with science fiction parody. It helped define Allen's style of witty, high concept humor and drew attention for its bold visual gags and enduring appeal.
It grossed 18,344,729 worldwide on a 2,000,000 budget, a strong return for a comedy that mixes sharp ideas with slapstick. The result cemented Allen's status as a mainstream director who can blend laughs with ideas.
Sleeper helped shape a 60s 70s mood by turning a future society into a playground for satirical ideas about control, consumer culture and celebrity tech. Its visual jokes and spoof of medical and political elites linger in film references and in the way audiences quote the era's look and tone.
Critics welcomed the film for its brisk pace and clever mash up of eras, even as some found its tone uneven. The movie uses humor to ask how much a society values efficiency and novelty at the expense of individuality, memory, and simple human warmth and a sense of seriousness.
