About Split Second

In a waterlogged future version of London, detective Harley Stone chases a sadistic killer who murdered his partner and keeps resurfacing to torment him. Stone's hunt drags him through flooded streets, where the line between man and monster seems to blur. His only allies are colleagues and the cynical reporter Michelle, played by Kim Cattrall, and Durkin and Thrasher among the precinct brass. The pursuer, known as the Rat Catcher, appears to be more than human, using the environment itself to strike. With every clue, Stone must decide how far he will go to close the case while confronted with a threat that might defy ordinary humanity. The city itself feels like a trap, a maze of water and steel.

Released in 1992, Split Second was directed by Tony Maylam from a script by Gary Scott Thompson. The cast includes Rutger Hauer and Cattrall.

The movie has a modest but lasting cult appeal among 90s sci fi thriller fans. Its waterlogged London and the Rat Catcher create striking, memorable imagery that still surfaces in discussions of the era. Rutger Hauer's hard edged portrayal is often highlighted by fans. Its creature design is frequently cited.

Critics noted its punchy pace and bleak mood, though some found its ideas messy or uneven. The film wrestles with obsession, guilt, and the perception of monstrous threat in a world where the city itself feels like a trap. Its themes linger after the credits, leaving a lasting impression.
