About Stranger
When 19-year-old Aathi arrives in a new land with her family, they're breaking ground as the first farmers in a landscape now called Denmark. Tension rises quickly when a nearby band of hunter-gatherers attacks, leaving Aathi alone with her younger brother after their parents are killed. To survive they are absorbed into the tribe, where language, customs and daily routines are unfamiliar and sometimes hostile. The film follows Aathi as she learns to work with strangers whose worldview clashes with her own, while protecting her brother and figuring out what loyalty and belonging mean in a world where people live by different rules.
Directed by Mads Hedegaard and created by Jesper Fink and Christian Bengtson, Stranger premiered in 2025 with lead performances by Angela Bundalovic, Danica Ćurčić and Benjamin Ahnstrøm Sharifzadeh, emphasizing naturalistic acting and austere production design.
Stranger did not register major studio grosses, and no widely reported worldwide box office totals are available, reflecting a limited theatrical presence and a modest release strategy.
Among viewers who saw it, the film sparked conversation about how early agricultural communities and hunter-gatherer groups are portrayed on screen, and about representation of young women in prehistoric settings. Its focus on everyday work, material culture and interpersonal power dynamics drew attention from niche critics and history-minded audiences.
Critical responses have been mixed, with a current average of 6.7/10 from a small number of votes. Reviewers tend to praise the leads' performances and the film's texture, while noting a slow pace and an uncompromising mood. Major themes include cultural contact, survival under changing social orders, and how identity is reshaped when familiar supports are gone. The movie asks quiet questions about adaptation and the costs of belonging, delivered through intimate scenes rather than broad spectacle.
