Jerri Blank returns to high school after a chaotic life that left her on the margins. Posing as a typical freshman, she is really a forty six year old woman trying to blend in at Flatpoint High. Her history of risky choices and limited trust keeps colliding with the everyday rhythms of a well meaning but often clueless student body. She encounters teachers who play with the genre in offbeat ways, especially the stern history instructor Chuck Noblet and the sensitive art teacher Geoffrey Jellineck, whose complicated relationship adds subtext to the halls.
