About Super Pig

Karin is a junior-high student who thinks she's rescued a weak piglet, only to learn the creature was a starving prince from the planet Booringo. After she shares her apple the piglet regains strength and reveals his true identity as Tonrariano III, who repays her kindness by granting her a bizarre "gift" — Karin becomes a pig with superpowers. She'd hoped to transform into a glamorous heroine like the parody "Cutey Chao," not a porcine crimefighter, and she's initially annoyed. Tonrariano explains she can shift into a Cutey Chao style form, but only after collecting 108 pearls earned by performing good deeds, so Karin reluctantly starts taking on odd missions while juggling school and her pride.

Released in 1994, the series was created by Taeko Ikeda and directed across episodes by Hiroshi Nishikiori, Kunihisa Sugishima, and Masato Kitagawa, with Yuri Shiratori, Yoshiharu Yamada and Rica Matsumoto among the lead voice cast.

There are no widely reported major awards or mainstream nominations tied to this show, so its recognition has mostly come through fan interest rather than industry prizes.

The series plays like a wink at magical girl and superhero conventions, openly parodying Cutey Honey while blending slapstick and sci-fi oddities. Its humor leans into silly transformations, bizarre villains, and the contrast between Karin’s teenage concerns and absurd heroic duties, making it feel light and mischievous rather than serious.

Critical and viewer response is modest but positive in niche circles, reflected in a 7.1/10 vote average from a small sample of viewers. Themes include identity, the awkwardness of growing up, responsibility framed as errands for others, and the idea that doing good can be its own reward, all wrapped in a family-friendly, action-comedy anime package.
